No 7: Researcher
In England and Wales, 9.1% of people working in research identify as LGBT+. However, this figure only represents the researchers of unspecified disciplines. When it comes to business research specifically, queer people constitute 7.3% of the total number.
This is not surprising, as some sociologists have suggested that gay men are more likely to be highly educated. It seems that research and gays go hand in hand. After all, we always bring the receipts to back up the T.
No 6: Bartender
Is it the inclusive nature of queer bars that always look for queer staff? Or perhaps it’s the love queer people have for a good time and a good splash? Who knows. But bartenders were found to be the sixth highest profession with LGBT+ workers in England and Wales, with 9.4% identifying as such. Additionally, bar and catering supervisors ranked 8th on the list!
Nightlife has always been a sector that’s open and inclusive to people of all identities and backgrounds. After all, the roots of gay culture are in ballrooms and nightclubs. However, the rate is probably lower in countries with fewer queer spaces.
No 5: Artist
This should come as no surprise, as the arts have always been a domain where gay men have thrived. According to the results, 9.8% of people working as artists identify as LGBT+. Whether it’s music, literature, or visual arts, queer people are strongly represented.
Additionally, the industry of arts officers, producers, and directors includes another 9% who identify as gay. What can we say? The world wouldn’t be as beautiful without the contributions of the gay community.
No 4: Barista
You know the running joke: I don’t want my coffee if it’s not made by a queer. And don’t we all have a favorite barista we secretly have a crush on? Sometimes it feels like being somewhere on the LGBT+ spectrum is a requirement when coffee shops hire.
And the statistics back it up! Coffee shops have the fourth highest number of queer employees in England and Wales, with an impressive 10.8% of workers identifying as LGBT+. So, next time they ask for your name to write on the cup, maybe give them your number too!
No 3: Theme park assistant
This might be a little surprising, but you can’t argue with the census results! Leisure park and theme park assistants take third place with 11.0% of queer employees.
It does kinda make sense. We queers do love a little cosplaying moment. Recently, there have been many viral videos of theme park mascots strutting and posing, with comment sections filled with the obvious remark: “It must be a gay man in there!” Well, it looks like they were right!”
No 2: Entertainer
Well, as Britney said “There’s only two types of people in the world: the ones that entertain and the ones that observe.”
We gay men definitely choose to entertain, and the numbers back it up. An impressive 12.3% of actors, entertainers, and presenters in England and Wales identify as queer.
This comes as no surprise. Theater, especially musical theater, has long been a predominantly gay industry. When you add other forms of entertainment—from TV presenters to event hosts—queer individuals are just naturals.
No 1: Flight attendant
You probably guessed it right from the beginning. The first place is taken by flight attendants, with 13.7% identifying as LGBT+.
According to Queerty, it is estimated that more than 50% of male flight attendants are gay. Why is that? As always, the most probable theory is rooted in patriarchy. Historically, flight attendant roles were synonymous with femininity, attracting gay men to the profession.
This trend continues today. For decades, the International Association of Flight Attendants has been working consciously to create a safe space for LGBT+ people.
